There is a big difference between building an eCommerce website and one that actually sells. I always like to use the analogy that if a tree falls in the forest, no one hears or sees it. You can have a beautiful web design but the bottom line is that it’s a complete waste of money unless you can market it. If you have a good network of friends and family, or a brick and mortar store where you can refer people to your website, then sure use a designer fresh out of college or even a pre-made package:

You should get an itemized list of exactly what that price includes and make sure that he also guareentees the work. You’d hate to be stuck with a bill like that and not have the website you envision.

As someone mentioned, you can also build your own website or have someone start it for you then you can continue to add content to it whenever you want.
